The 21 Types of Tax we pay (with a spurious link to The Beatles)

An idle lunch time surf took me to an HMRC document which itemised no fewer than 21 Taxes that made up the £437 BILLION collected by the UK Government in the 2011-12 fiscal year.

George Harrison once sang in his second best song (Taxman*) "If you get too cold I'll tax the heat" and this happened with the introduction of the Climate Change Levy in 2001. The next line is "If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet", but we're not predicting that Mr Osborne will introduce the Shoe Leather Tax in the 20th March Budget.

For those keen on lists, the 21 taxes are

  • Income Tax
  • Capital Gains Tax
  • National Insurance
  • VAT
  • Corporation Tax
  • Bank payroll Tax
  • Petroleum Revenue Tax
  • Fuel Duties
  • Inheritance Tax
  • Stamp Duty
  • Tobacco Duties
  • Spirits Duties
  • Beer Duties
  • Wines Duties
  • Cider Duties
  • Betting & Gaming Duties
  • Air Passenger Duty
  • Insurance Premium Tax
  • Landfill Tax
  • Climate Change Levy
  • Aggregates Tax

How many have you paid (directly or indirectly) over the last year? I counted 14.

For those with time on their hands, the full list of income raised by each tax is here.

* George's best song is of course "Here Comes The Sun"
